In 1998, Dennis Worthen, Ph.D., founded the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) with a vision of enhancing curricula design in nonprescription education and fostering research and collaboration among pharmacy faculty. During this time, the NMA supported faculty who taught self care curricula and provided resources, mentoring, and opportunities for networking.
In Summer 2009, the NMA extended its network to include students, non-faculty clinicians and preceptors. NMA is dedicated to finding unique programs centered in nonprescription medicines and self care conditions along with unparalleled opportunities for networking in the field.
The mission of the Nonprescription Medicines Academy is to support educators, clinicians and students in the field of pharmacy by providing relevant and impactful information on nonprescription medicines and self care conditions, and is designed to promote networking, information-gathering and information-sharing among these key pharmacy audiences.
The Nonprescription Medicines Academy defines self care as a person taking a proactive approach to their health by assessing, identifying and treating their condition to ensure positive mental, spiritual, and physical health outcomes.
