About NMA

In 1998, Dennis Worthen, Ph.D., founded the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) with a vision of enhancing education in the nonprescription arena . Dr. Worthen, the former Director of Pharmacy Relations at Procter & Gamble, has since retired from P&G. Dr. Worthen worked in collaboration with several nationally recognized pharmacy educators to initiate NMA. Until that time, faculty teaching in the nonprescription medicine arena had no formalized mechanism for interaction. But that changed in the fall of 1998 when P&G sponsored the first NMA Conference in Cincinnati. Fifteen faculty members were selected to attend the first NMA Conference. Faculty had the opportunity to interact with each other and selected P&G experts and exchange a wealth of educational ideas. That first small Conference was considered a major success by both the faculty participants and P&G and has continued as an annual NMA event. The NMA has grown under the guidance of Jenelle Sobotka, Pharm. D., Manager of Pharmacy Relations at P&G. The NMA website was developed in response to discussions and faculty requests at the NMA Conferences.

The Goals of NMA Are:

To allow faculty who instruct on nonprescription medicines the opportunity to interact and share ideas.
To stimulate innovation in new teaching methodologies and promote research concepts surrounding nonprescription medicines.
To provide insight into the pharmaceutical industry's role in development of innovative nonprescription medicines and medical devices.
To demonstrate the support of Procter & Gamble for college of pharmacy faculty in the advancement of education and research on nonprescription medicines.

The NMA's Definition of Self Care:

Self care embodies a person taking a proactive approach to his/her health by assessing, identifying, and exercising preventive/wellness and/or remedial measures to ensure positive mental, spiritual, and physical health outcomes for oneself.
