Forty-six college of pharmacy faculty members, representing schools and colleges of
pharmacy from across the country, who recently participated in the 2007 Nonprescription
Medicines Academy (NMA), held Oct. 4-6 in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was the10th annual
meeting of the Academy, which began in 1998 as an educational conference planned
exclusively for faculty who provide instruction on nonprescription medicines and medical
devices. The goal of the Conference is to support a learning environment and networking
opportunity for faculty to interact and share ideas, stimulate new teaching methodologies,
and promote research concepts in the nonprescription arena.
The Conference programming includes presentations on topics including education,
research, and current public health issues in the area of nonprescription medicines. As a
condition of selection, each faculty member is expected to share an instructional
innovative from their coursework or a project or research initiative as a brief oral
presentation or poster during the Conference. The topics presented varied from
Medicare Part D: An Evaluation of Participant Satisfaction, Coverage Gap Management,
and OTC Drug UseĀ, Patient Perception of the Role of the Pharmacist as a Resource for
Information Regarding Nonprescription Medication, to Training Students in
Documentation of Self-Care Interventions. Additional conference presentations included
Product Seals - a review of the USP and Consumer Lab Labels, A Look at Self-Care
across the World, and successes of the new NASPA/NMA Self-Care Challenge for
Student Pharmacists.
