Banned Substances for International Sports Deletions and Additions The Associated Press

The Associated Press reported on September 23, 2003, that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) decided to remove both caffeine and pseudoephedrine from the list of banned substances. WADA President Dick Pound indicated the committee was trying to be "reasonable" and prevent athletes from being suspended or disgraced after using common cold remedies or drinking beverages containing caffeine. A new addition to the banned substances list is modafinil (Alertec®, Provigil®), a nonamphetamine central nervous system stimulant. This drug is approved for use in excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. Although not an FDA-approved indication, the drug is also being investigated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and treatment of fatigue in Multiple Sclerosis.
