MonoSol Rx to Provide OTC Supplements and Vitamins in Orally Dissolving Strips

Leiner Health Products announced an agreement with MonoSol Rx on August 8 to market orally dissolving OTC supplements and vitamins in strip form. Much like the pocket packs for fresh breath, Leiner will use the same technology from MonoSol Rx to create the new line of products expected to be available to distributors later this fall. The manufacturer claims that these products will be helpful to the consumer who is on the go, or not able to carry bulky medication vials. The manufacturer also sees a benefit to those seniors who take more than three prescription medications a day, and/or to those who have difficulty swallowing large tablets or large numbers of pills. MonoSol hopes that use of this new dosage form will decrease the number of medications swallowed, and improve patient compliance. The strips will offer exact dosing, and require no water. The quick-dissolve technology allows for rapid absorption of the product into the bloodstream. Some of the OTC products currently being offered to adults and children are: children's cough and cold diphenhydramine medications; sore throat strips with benzocaine and menthol; and melatonin strips for sleep. Leiner Health Products is based out of Carson, CA, and is the leading store brand supplier in the OTC Market. They are also the largest manufacturer of store brand vitamins, minerals, and supplements. MonoSol Rx is based out of Portage, IN, and is the leading drug-delivery company using film as a fast-dissolve oral drug-delivery platform. In addition to the OTC products being manufactured, MonoSol Rx recently filed a DEA facilities registration to allow the development of Class II-V scheduled drugs using their film technology. This was in response to the high demand from pharmaceutical companies looking for alternative delivery systems for patients who are experiencing pain but are unable to swallow.
