Zegerid OTC
The FDA has approved an Rx-to-OTC switch of Zegerid, an immediate-release formulation of the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole. Zegerid combines omeprazole 20 mg with sodium bicarbonate 1,100 mg; the sodium bicarbonate raises the gastric pH, thereby protecting omeprazole from acid degradation. The product will be marketed as Zegerid OTC by Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc.
